M1: Describing my own Photographic Style and Influences

M1: Describing my own Photographic Style and Influences

In this report, I will be shaping my own photography style. I will research different influencial photographers I would like to follow and the type of photography they take.

                                      Audrey Marquis

Audrey Marquis is a cinematic photographer. She takes photos with hidden storylines using a cinematic feel. Most of her work can be found on her Instagram account. She experiments with lighting and uses lots of props to help her scenes come to life.

                                    Lazar Bogdanovic

Lazar Bogdanovic is also a cinematic photographer, You can see that his work is slightly different to Audrey Marquis's work since he sometimes uses people as his subjects instead of just props.

                                       Rodger Deakins

Rodger Deakins is a cinematographer famous for filming Blade Runner 2049, Skyfall and many other movies. Here you can see some scenes that he has filmed.

                                   My Photography Style

After researching many different styles and phtoographers, I have decided to create cinematic photography for my project.

Movies/TV shows have iconic movie scenes, you can see Monica's apartment above from the Friends TV series. For my photography, I will create still scenes that would expect to see from a movie/TV show. Different film genres will be reflected through my photos. The genres I could cover are: horror, fantasy, comedy, romance, action, drama, mystery, adventure... I will utilise areas around Doncaster to help me create these scenes. I am going to call my project "Cinematic Doncaster". I chose this name since my photos mimic anthology TV series; every episode is different just like my photos.

How will I replicate my influences' styles?

To emulate the cinematic style, I will be using props that you would typically see in the genre. I will ask people to be the subjects in my photos so they can help act out the scene. I will use a variation of camera angles and lighting to create the feel for each genre. I think this will help me stand out/surpass the photos taken by my influences.

Here are some ideas I have to take photos for each genre.

Horror:

Misty graveyard as a landscape photo with green lighting.

Someone holds a lamp alone in the dark, dutch angle  and red lighting. The door is open behind them and something ran past.

An empty abandoned house with lights on.

Here are some photos I took to give a feel for the horror genre.

Here are a few of my ideas:

 Romance:

Old couple walking down a path lined with trees and flowers everywhere.

Couple giving each other flowers while on a date.

Drama:

Someone throws a drink at another person at a bar.

Murder scene, killer had blood all over a white shirt.

Comedy:

Sitcom poster photo taken for a Doncaster sitcom show.

Action:

Subject running away from something.

Fight scene between two people.
